Things just got easier for Edmontonians who wish to ride their bikes throughout all four seasons, as Bike Edmonton and the City of Edmonton have partnered up to give out free studded winter tires.
The initiative aims to make winter cycling safer and more enjoyable by providing studded tires to those who are new to riding in colder conditions.
It’s part of Edmonton’s WinterCity strategy, which works with community groups and Edmontonians to promote positive winter experiences.
“Bike Edmonton is honoured to work with the WinterCity Strategy to help Edmontonians embrace the colder season,” wrote Bike Edmonton.
To be eligible to receive free studded winter tires, you must:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Be new or relatively new to winter cycling
- Have a bike that accepts commonly available studded tires
- Do three winter cycling challenges by January 31, 2025
- Fill out a questionnaire by February 21, 2025

Some examples of the challenges include watching winter cycling videos, recording your bike rides by taking photos of you on a winter cycling excursion, and riding over to the weekly Coffee Outside meet-up downtown.
