Trump won’t stop talking about Canada and people are sick of it

After sharing his thoughts on former finance minister Chrystia Freeland’s resignation, US President-elect Donald Trump took to social media once again to discuss why it’s a “great idea” for Canada to become the 51st state.

In a post on Truth Social at 3:23 am ET on December 18, he stated, “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense!”

He then explained how Canadians would benefit should their country join the US.

“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State,” stated Trump. “They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. [Fifty-first] state!!!”

Fed-up netizens expressed their frustration online.

“Jesus Christ, is he really not going to shut up about this?” asked one Redditor.

Another commented, “The US becoming the 11th Canadian province is an even better idea.”

One person asked, “I thought he didn’t like immigration. Wouldn’t this be around 40 million new immigrants?”

Someone else wrote, “Once was a joke, twice was pushing it. This is too far and completely disrespectful. Trudeau (or whoever is next) should not be tolerating this at all. It’s insulting to us as a country.”

Others defended Trump, insisting that he was only joking.

However, others warned that Trump might actually be serious.

“This ain’t a troll when he’s constantly bringing it up,” argued one Reddit user. “We need to take this as a serious threat. Time for Trumpers in Canada to wake up and stop being brainwashed.”

Another added, “When Trump initially announced his run for president everyone laughed and took it as a joke and look how that ended up. This needs to be treated as a serious threat.”

On November 29, Trudeau flew to Florida to have dinner with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after Trump threatened a 25% tariff on products from Mexico and Canada. A source had told Fox News that Trump reportedly suggested that Canada become the 51st state, a statement met with nervous laughter.

Some Canadian politicians dismissed his comments as a joke. However, in a TV interview on December 8, Trump doubled down on the threat of tariffs, once again suggesting that Canada should become another state.

“If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state,” he said.

Trump has also mocked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him Governor Trudeau.
