Trump name-drops Gretzky in bizarre Canada diss

President-elect Donald Trump has a lot of ideas for Canada as he gets ready for his second-term in office — including a new one with a wacky idea for the country’s next Prime Minister.

The 78-year-old has been spewing different theories for Canada online, and yesterday he suggested Wayne Gretzky, the NHL’s all-time leading scorer, should lead the nation.

“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘the Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles,” wrote Trump on Truth Social.

“I said, ‘Wayne why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so fun to watch!”

Trump’s plea for Canadians to start a Gretzky-for-Prime-Minister campaign also contains a sneak diss where he references the role as “soon to be known as the Governor of Canada.” This follows several recent instances of Trump saying Canada should become the USA’s 51st state, including reportedly to Justin Trudeau’s face at dinner.

The upcoming American President’s constant references to Canada as the 51st state has drawn mixed reviews from Canadians. Some are open to the idea, while many are aghast.

Gretzky attended Trump’s private victory party back in November at Mar-A-Lago. The hockey legend was seen with his family, and Gretzky even wore a “MAGA” hat in some of the photos.

While he was a great player on the ice, the 63-year-old has never shown an interest in running for office.

Trump will take back office on January 20 to start his second term. Canada has its own federal election fast approaching, which will take place sometime in 2025. It’s very unlikely that Gretzky will be on the ballot, although you can never say never.
