A new report is shedding light on the viewpoints some Albertans hold regarding immigration and identities in the country.
Conducted by Leger for the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS), the poll found that one-fourth of Albertans believe immigrants should give up their customs and traditions, with the same amount of Canadians holding that same viewpoint.
Quebec polled the highest on the same question with 33% of residents saying yes, while Atlantic Canada landed at 25%. British Columbians polled the lowest with 21%.
Young Canadians (aged 18 to 34) disagreed the most with the question, with 65% saying immigrants should now give up their customs and traditions. 57% of Canadians in the 35 to 54 age bracket said no, dropping to 51% in the 55+ age demographic.
The poll also found that three in four Albertans agree that it’s important to transmit our customs and traditions to our children, in line with three in four Canadians holding that same sentiment.
The survey was conducted by the firm Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies over the period from September 20 to 22, 2024, with a sample of 1612 Canadians.
