Oilers teammates pulled epic prank on McDavid after he reached 1,000 points

Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid was the victim of the silent treatment after hitting 1,000 points last month.

The Oilers captain became the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to hit the 1,000-point mark in a win over the Nashville Predators last month. To no surprise, his teammates were equally, if not more excited than him as soon as he hit the marker, piling onto the ice to celebrate the 27-year-old’s massive achievement.

Once the game had wrapped up, McDavid, who was named first star, skated back onto the ice to a loud ovation from those in attendance at Rogers Place. The reaction, however, was far different when he got back into the Oilers dressing room.

Seemingly knowing what was coming, a smiling McDavid walked into a quiet dressing room. Several teammates, who clearly planned the prank ahead of time, were trying to hold back laughs as they did their best to give him the silent treatment. After several seconds passed, however, they erupted into cheers.

“I don’t know what to say,” McDavid said in a speech for his teammates afterward. “To see the way you guys reacted, that means the world to me.”

The silent treatment prank is nothing new in NHL locker rooms. Another memorable one came nearly 10 years ago, when the Montreal Canadiens did the exact same thing to former goaltender Carey Price following a shutout versus the Ottawa Senators.

McDavid was given more recognition for the big achievement ahead of last night’s game versus the New York Rangers. As is customary in the NHL for any player who hits the illustrious 1,000-point marker, he received a golden stick during the pre-game ceremony.

To little surprise, McDavid was the star of the show once again last night, registering four assists in what was a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. After a rather slow start to the season by his standards, he suddenly has 35 points, which is just six shy of Martin Necas for the league lead.
