The 4 Nations Face-Off has captivated hockey fans in not only the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden but the whole world as well.
Hockey fans from other countries are keeping a close eye on the tournament as they watch the world’s best hockey players compete against each other. That includes some countries you wouldn’t expect to be carrying games, like Mexico.
It turns out that a Mexican channel was broadcasting the Canada-USA game on Saturday night, and one of their broadcasters had an absolutely electrifying call on Connor McDavid’s goal to open the scoring.
While you cannot knock the great play-by-play commentary by broadcasters in both Canada and the United States, you have to admit that the energy being projected by this Mexican broadcaster is unparalleled. It sounds more like a call you would hear in a soccer game with the intense “GOAAAAAL” call right after McDavid beat Connor Helleybuck.
It’s also reminiscent of the iconic calls that we’ve heard from Hockey Night in Canada’s Punjabi broadcasts, most notably Harnarayan Singh, who went viral for a call he had in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks.
Canadian head coach Jon Cooper said earlier today that this tournament has done something for the sport that hasn’t been seen in a decade. Hearing that call and the excitement from a country that not only doesn’t have a team to root for in this tournament but is also not a traditional hockey market certainly helps to prove that point.
With Thursday’s final between Canada and the USA set to be one of the most iconic of a generation, perhaps we’ll get more calls like this one sooner rather than later.
