It’s been seven months since raging wildfires destroyed huge parts of the town of Jasper. Now, one of the town’s beloved eateries is calling on the community for help with its major relocation plans.
On July 22, Patricia Street Deli owners Glen and Wendy Leitch were forced to evacuate due to wildfires encroaching on Jasper. The iconic sandwich shop, which opened in 2004 at 610 Patricia St, Jasper, was one of the buildings destroyed by the fires.
However, the team has now decided to reopen the business in Edmonton and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its rebuilding at 10567 111 Street. It is hoping to be able to open in July 2025.
“As a family business and a hell of a team, we are certain that now is the time to get back to do what we do best — making sandwiches, memories, and making friends,” the Kickstarter said.
Patricia Street Deli was a staple in Jasper for light bites such as freshly-made sandwiches, soups, and baked goods.
While the new Edmonton space is far larger than the Jasper premises, at 2,500 square feet compared to 570 square feet, Patricia Street Deli said it will offer the “same cozy and rustic vibes.”
The new location will allow space to dine in and enjoy a beer. Patricia Street Deli aims to continue serving its core menu items, but the extra space will enable it to create a wider menu.
Patricia Street Deli added that it was launching the Kickstarter as it hasn’t received funds from the insurance, which will largely help it break even from previous debt. Money from the campaign will go towards its lease deposit, renovation, equipment, payroll, and inventory.
While Patricia Street Deli is focusing on building in Edmonton right now, it hopes to reopen in Jasper once new structures are in place.
“For now, for our own financial and emotional healing, we need to get back to work,” they added.
The Kickstarter has a target of $33,452, which it needs to reach by March 29, 2025. For those looking to donate, there are rewards from exclusive Patricia Street Deli merch right up to creating and naming your very own sandwich on the menu.
