TSN’s James Duthie is remembering his great friend, Darren Dutchyshen, during the World Junior Championships.
Dutchyshen became a household name to many Canadians thanks to his outstanding work for many years as a co-host of SportsCentre on TSN. The 57-year-old tragically passed away last May after a lengthy cancer battle.
Dutchyshen was always known for his love of the annual World Juniors tournament, which just kicked off a day ago. Fittingly, Duthie chose to honour his good friend for the opening day of the tournament with a custom suit.

“New jacket tonight to remember a guy who loved the World Juniors,” Duthie said.
Dutchyshen revealed that he had prostate cancer in 2021, and ended up being off-air for a large portion of 2022 as a result. He made an appearance on the SportsCentre panel in September of 2022 and opened up about the struggles he was going through.
“It’s not the kind of cancer where you ring a bell. So it’s still in the base of my skull, my ribs, my legs, hips, and stuff like that, but it’s treatable, and I feel really, really good. And the place that I feel best is right here,” Dutchyshen told co-host Jennifer Hedger, in addition to a national audience. “I had 54, 55 years of really good health. And then you really appreciate what [the doctors] do, and the people in your lives, and what you get to do for a living so it’s fun. It’s nice to be back.”
Fans throughout Canada loved Dutchyshen for his infectious personality and quick-witted humour, and many applauded Duthie’s new suit design.
