The Edmonton Oilers apparently have a big fan within the golfing community.
Though many hockey players like to golf in the summer, one of golf’s biggest stars is keeping an eye on the Oilers this season. Paul Bissonnette and Keith Yandle recently ran into Rory McIlroy while playing golf and discovered that the four-time majors champion is a huge Oilers fan.
“He said last year, in the playoffs, he got super into hockey, loving it, watching all the games,” Yandle said on the most recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast. “Guess who his team is… the Oilers. He loves the Oilers.”
It appears that golf star Rory McIlroy is a huge #Oilers fan after watching last year’s run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The story put a big smile on the face of co-host (and former Oilers defenceman) Ryan Whitney. Despite not having much success in his Edmonton tenure, he has become a fan of the team in his retirement and often voices his support on the pod.
Whitney made a bold prediction with this newfound knowledge.
“God, I want him to get the Masters, now he needs to get the Masters,” Whitney said with a big smile. “If he gets the Masters, you know that means the Oilers are winning the Stanley Cup.”
Since turning professional in 2007, McIlroy has had an illustrious career in golf. Throughout his career, he has spent 122 weeks ranked as the world’s top golfer and currently sits third in the PGA rankings.
Despite all his accolades, which include two PGA Championships and one US Open win, the 35-year-old has still not managed to get his hands on the Masters’ green jacket; however, he did come close in 2022 with a second-place finish.
As the iconic tournament rolls around this April, McIlroy will be hoping to set the tone and finally finish the job, something the Oilers are also looking to do in June.
