Filistix: Popular Filipino restaurant to close one of its Edmonton locations

One of Edmonton’s most beloved Filipino restaurants has announced it will be closing one of its locations this year.

Filistix, which offers an elevated Filipino dining experience in Edmonton, is wrapping up service at its downtown location on December 31 after five and a half years.

Filistix, which was founded by Ariel Del Rosario and Roel Canafranca, has been a longstanding part of the YEG food scene since opening its food truck in 2008, before expanding to locations at the University of Alberta, downtown and Takam Market.

In an Instagram post, Del Rosario expressed the difficulty of operating a downtown restaurant following the pandemic.

“We take pride in knowing that we fought hard and did everything we could to stay open. However, the aftermath of the pandemic has seen this paradigm shift like no other, where working from home is now the norm and that hit us really hard,” he explained.

“The fact that the Government District, and the downtown core in general, no longer has the vibrancy nor the density it once had, has taken its toll on us. It’s no secret that people are spending and eating out less than ever before and these factors make it untenable for a restaurant like ours to survive.”

Luckily for fans of Filistix, the outposts at U of A’s Student Union Building and Takam Market will remain open.
