Toronto’s new WNBA team name just might have been a bit too fast for its own good.
With Toronto joining the WNBA as an expansion franchise in 2026, fans across the country have been eagerly wondering how the team will brand itself.
But on Tuesday night, a few fans discovered a possible leak of the team’s identity, via a stats page on the WNBA website that has now been corrected.
According to the leak, the team was listed as the Toronto Tempo, perhaps a nod to both the city’s music scene and the team’s desire to play a fast-paced game.

One working theory is that “Tempo” could also just be a placeholder for a temporary name, rather than the final product.
In any case, we should have a team name reveal before too long, with the team looking to drum up interest ahead of their entry into the league the season after next.
In August, the team launched a website titled nameyourteam.ca, with the expansion franchise asking fans to help shape the team’s identity ahead of its league debut.
“It’s a momentous moment for the league, the players, the game, and for you – the fans. But first, we need a team identity,” the website reads. “We are collecting names, ideas, colours, and creative inspiration from all Canadians to help shape the new name, logo and mascot of Canada’s first WNBA team.”
While the leak is unconfirmed, the team’s social media accounts and an official podcast have been narrowing down team names that definitely didn’t make the cut, with Raptorettes, Towers, Stars, and Foxes among the dozens of names that the team officially discarded as options.
For those looking to watch the WNBA before it comes to Toronto, the 2025 regular season gets underway on May 16.
