Edmonton ranks among Canada’s top-trending winter travel destinations, according to the latest winter travel outlook from Expedia.
Released on Tuesday, the Where to Winter outlook highlights this year’s winter travel trends, the best ways to save, and when to book.
The data is based on flight and lodging searches from the past year.
Expedia reports that Edmonton is the fourth-most trending domestic destination for Canadians this winter, with lodging searches for Alberta’s capital increasing by 20%.
It also ranks ninth among Canadian travellers’ most-searched lodging destinations for the season.
For the Christmas holidays, YEG is the fifth-most searched Canadian destination for flights by Canadian travellers.
Our neighbours to the south in Calgary also found themselves in several top spots.
The city ranks as the 10th-most searched Canadian destination for American travellers, the eighth for Canadian travellers this winter, and fourth during the Christmas holidays.
Banff and Canmore unsurprisingly lead Alberta’s trending destinations, with growing interest from American travellers. Canmore saw a 104% surge in searches, becoming the second-highest trending Canadian travel destination for Americans. Banff follows closely at fourth, with a 60% increase.

Japan is becoming increasingly popular for Canadians looking to travel internationally this winter. Search increases in three major Japanese cities top the list, including Osaka (95%), Tokyo (90%), and Kyoto (79%).
“The longer holiday vacation period means more time for travellers to explore far-off destinations,” Expedia notes.
During the Christmas holidays, the most popular flight searches are for warm destinations like Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Delhi, Cancun, and Las Vegas, with travellers from Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal leading the way.
