Edmonton’s city bird vote has been narrowed down to three choices

Bird Friendly Edmonton is holding a vote to choose a bird that best represents the City of Edmonton while raising awareness about urban wildlife and biodiversity.

And Edmontonians have spoken, narrowing the choices down to three birds that will compete in a final vote this spring.

While some days it feels like only magpies and pigeons rule the city, it couldn’t be further from the truth! Over 300 bird species have been recorded in Edmonton, with some residing year-round and others stopping by during migratory journeys to and from their breeding grounds.

Bird Friendly Edmonton consulted hundreds of naturalists and Edmontonians, whittled down the list of candidates to six birds that best represented the city, and put them to a vote last fall.

Three birds remain after the first round of voting. These birds can be found in many Edmonton neighbourhoods and natural areas year-round.

Here are the final birds competing for the title of Edmonton’s city bird:

Anyone in the Edmonton area can cast one vote to help choose Edmonton’s bird. The final round of voting will be open until March 31.
