Edmonton Oilers’ McDavid discusses ketchup “phobia” with students

Edmonton Oilers superstar forward Connor McDavid can’t seem to escape his distaste for ketchup.

Fans learned about McDavid’s “phobia” in the Amazon series Faceoff: Inside the NHL, which was released in early October. His wife Lauren shared that the 27-year-old is afraid of it, but she still finds ways to sneak it into her meals.

“Connor is afraid of ketchup. So Sheridan (their chef), he always, like, sneakily brings it over to me, because he knows I like it,” Kyle shared.

McDavid has been asked about ketchup since and plays along well with what has now become a running joke.

Yesterday, he visited students at the Ottewell School for a fundraising event for the Ben Stelter Foundation. One student asked him about the ketchup conundrum, and he once again played along.

“I wish I had a better answer for you than that. I just simply don’t like it. I definitely got it from [my older brother, Cam],” McDavid said. “It was just something that we never had in the house. I just can’t stand it. I wish I had a better answer for you. It’s just not something that I enjoy.”

The no-ketchup routine seems to be working just fine for McDavid, who is well on his way to being considered one of the all-time greats in NHL history. He recorded his 1,000th point in just 659 games earlier this season, making him the fourth-fastest ever to hit the illustrious mark.

McDavid has been particularly hot lately, racking up 30 points over his last 15 games. He’s also riding a four-game point streak, during which he’s amassed nine points. He’ll look to continue his scoring ways this afternoon as the Oilers are set to take on the Vegas Golden Knights.
