The Edmonton Oilers will be losing a defenceman from their roster today.
One day after placing Travis Dermott on waivers, the Minnesota Wild ended up scooping him up for free from the Oilers, officially announcing the news on Friday afternoon.
The news comes less than a day after the Oilers’ drubbing of the Wild 7-1 at Rogers Place.
The 27-year-old has played in 10 games this season, recording two penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -3 while averaging just over 13 minutes in ice time.
Dermott will lose his roster spot to Alec Regula, whom the Oilers picked up from the Boston Bruins on waivers earlier this week.
Moving cities midseason isn’t exactly something that Dermott is doing for the first time, however.
The Wild mark Dermott’s fifth NHL franchise, also having played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Arizona Coyotes prior to his time with the Oilers.
Originally drafted by the Leafs in 2015, Dermott spent seven years in the franchise before eventually being traded to Vancouver for a third round pick in 2022. Though he’s shown flashes of potential throughout his NHL career, he’s never quite carved out the consistent top-four role he was projected to land during his early years in Toronto.
It won’t be long before Dermott could get a chance to play against Edmonton in a possible revenge game, however. The Oilers travel to Minnesota in almost exactly a month’s time, facing off against the Wild in St. Paul’s on January 15.
In other waiver wire action, the New York Islanders placed Pierre Engvall and Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers.
