Edmonton Oilers acquire 6-foot-4 defenceman from Boston Bruins off waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have turned to the waiver wire to help acquire some depth on the back end.

The Oilers have decided to take a shot on Alec Regula, who was placed on waivers yesterday by the Boston Bruins. The 6-foot-4, 211-pound blue liner was put on waivers after being activated from the injured reserve earlier in the day.

Regula was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2018 draft but was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Brendan Perlini before making his professional debut. Over the course of three seasons, he played 19 games with the Blackhawks, scoring one goal and accumulating 16 penalty minutes.

Regula was traded once again following the 2022-23 season in a deal that saw him and Ian Mitchell head to the Bruins in exchange for Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall. He spent the entire 2023-24 season playing in the AHL for the Providence Bruins, where he scored four goals and 26 points in 55 outings. He was also an extremely impressive +36 during that span.

The American blue liner is on a one-year deal with a cap hit of just $775,000. He will be an RFA at season’s end.

The Oilers have been searching for help on the back end, as they are currently rolling with Troy Stecher and Travis Dermott as their sixth and seventh defencemen.

While this pickup does help regarding their depth, it likely isn’t the only move the Oilers are planning to make to boost their back end. They’ve been looking for different options via trade all season and may look to make a move closer to the deadline to give them the best opportunity possible to win the Stanley Cup this spring.
