Sports betting doesn’t seem to be working out great for Drake.
The Canadian rapper is a well-known sports fan and even serves as the Toronto Raptors’ global ambassador. What he’s also become well-known for, however, is losing significant amounts of money on sports gambling. He’s become so bad at it, in fact, that it’s become known as the Drake curse whenever he bets on a specific team or individual athlete.
Last night, Mike Tyson was on the wrong end of the Drake curse, as the 38-year-old placed $355,000 on him to defeat Jake Paul in last night’s boxing bout. Considering Tyson is 58 years old, Paul was considered the heavy favourite, though that didn’t seem to phase Drake, who shared his bet on his Instagram page.
“I’m late but I’m here money on the liiiiiiiiine for today and tomorrow,” Drake wrote on Instagram. “I need some dubs.”
Had Drake won the bet, he would have received a whopping $1.01 million. To little surprise, however, the aging Tyson looked like a shadow of his once-dominant self and lost to Paul by unanimous decision.
This is one of several significant betting losses for Drake this year. He lost $700,000 in January after betting on Sean Strickland to defeat Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297 and an additional $500,000 after picking the Edmonton Oilers to defeat the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
While all these losses are significant, Drake’s net worth is an estimated $250 million, so it’s safe to say he will be more than OK. One thing that is for sure, though, is that he clearly loves sports wagering.
As for last night’s fight itself, the vast majority of fans felt it failed to live up to the hype. Tyson looked his age, and Paul seemed more interested in making it last as long as possible rather than attempting to finish it. Nonetheless, they drew in plenty of viewers, ensuring that both made a ton of money.
