Canadian singer changes ‘O Canada’ lyrics at 4 Nations

Emotions were high heading into the 4 Nations championship game Thursday night, with Team Canada and Team USA going head-to-head amid political tensions between the neighbouring countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and continued 51st state threats made the stakes even higher for the championship game.

Before team Canada broke the internet with their exhilarating 3-2 OT win against the USA, another moment went viral.

Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk sang the national anthem to a tough crowd of booing Team USA fans.

Viewers then did a double take when she seemingly changed the lyrics to a verse in “O Canada.”

“True patriot love, that only us command,” she sang.

People took to X to share their confusion.

“Booing the Canadian anthem is insane. Also how the hell does Chantal Kreviazuk not know the anthem,” reads one post.

It turns out the “Feels Like Home” singer tweaked the lyrics on purpose.

According to several reports, Kreviazuk’s team confirmed that she changed the lyric from “in all of us command” to “that only us command” in response to Trump’s 51st state comments.

The singer also told the Associated Press that she did it because she believes “in democracy, and a sovereign nation should not have to be defending itself against tyranny and fascism.”

Daily Hive has reached out to her team for confirmation.

Her remix drew mixed reviews from Canadians.

Many supported her lyrical form of protest.

“Chantal Kreviazuk owning Trump by changing the line ‘True patriot love in all of us command’ to ‘True patriot love, that only us command’ is better than any hidden message Kendrick Lamar had at the Super Bowl,” wrote one X user.

“To Chantal Kreviazuk, your emphasis on ‘free’ brought tears to my eyes!” posted another.

But others weren’t so impressed.

“The Canadian National Anthem is not Chantal Kreviazuk’s to edit or take creative licence with,” shared one viewer. “It belongs to ALL Canadians. If she didn’t want to sing it, she should have refused the offer. Disgusting performance.”

“Dear Canada, never invite Chantal Kreviazuk to sing our national anthem again. Anyone who changes the lyrics to make a political statement on an international stage is a disgrace,” reads another post.

Either way, Canada had the last laugh. Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trolled Trump after Team Canada’s victory.
