Canada’s first WNBA team unveils its new name and logo

Canada’s first-ever WNBA team officially has a new name.

On Thursday, the name and logo for the Toronto Tempo were unveiled, a little less than 24 hours after the team name leaked online.

The logo features a T on a basketball with waves indicating motion, while the basketball itself is a shade of light blue.

Various variations of the logo also indicate text of the team’s name and a shade of purple on the background, suggesting a possible jersey colour.

The team will join the WNBA as the league’s 14th franchise in 2026. Their primary home venue will be out of Coca-Cola Coliseum, but the team plans to play a few home games per year in other cities in the country.

What’s the meaning behind the new WNBA team name?

“Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team – including, of course, the in-game experience at the arena,” said team president Teresa Resch in a press release. “The sounds of the court. The beat of the music. The passion of the fans around you and the intensity of the players on the floor.  Capturing all that energy, excitement and feeling was crucial as we chose the name for Canada’s WNBA team.”

In a call to fans for name submissions this year, the team reportedly received more than 10,000 submissions before they settled on Tempo.

“Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city, and in the energy of the people who call Canada home,” said Teresa Resch added. “As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.”

And if you’re looking to start repping, the press release added that more information about merchandise will be available soon.
