One of Edmonton’s best-known and loved restaurants has revealed it will close this year after more than seven years in business.
Biera, a popular neighbourhood restaurant in YEG’s Ritchie Market, is set to close by the end of December along with Blind Enthusiasm’s Market Brewery location and the Biera Market.
“Due to changes to market conditions, we feel the restaurant is in need of a revamp, but we’re not going to be the ones to do it,” said Greg Zeschuk, owner of Biera and Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company.
“Our goal is to find a worthy successor with fresh ideas and energy that will continue to serve customers in the existing space.”
Biera was known for its creative selection of small bites, including a cheese bar. Within the space is the Market brewery, where Blind Enthusiasm makes a variety of beers and ales and runs its own barrel-aging program from the site.
While Biera will close for weekday lunches from Friday, November 8, it will remain open for brunch and happy hour on weekends and dinner services six nights a week until it closes in December.
Meanwhile, the Market Brewery will operate until the end of December. However, it isn’t the end of the line for the space, which will reopen as a new business with many of the same products in the new year.
Fans of Blind Enthusiasm’s beer will be pleased to know that The Monolith Brewery at 9919 78th Avenue NW will continue as usual.
“This change will allow us to put a greater focus on its unique brewing program, expanding our current operations with new offerings, including additional tour options and launching a direct to consumer sales business to better serve our customers.”
While Biera’s closure is a huge loss to the city, we’ll be watching out for what’s next from Blind Enthusiasm.
