A new library has been proposed for the south side of Edmonton, set to replace and double the size of the current Riverbend Branch. However, funding still needs to be secured before the project can move ahead.
Edmonton Public Library (EPL) and the City of Edmonton are working on plans for the new branch, which would be built at the Bryan Anderson Athletic Grounds Park near the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre and the Leger Transit Centre.
It’s a convenient spot that would also put it close to schools, including Lillian Osborne, Archbishop Joseph MacNeil, and Mother Margaret Mary.
The new branch would be medium-sized, according to EPL, with 15,000 to 18,000 square feet, including a larger program room, a maker space, and a kids’ play area.
There will also be quiet study rooms, group collaboration spaces, and lots of soft seating for reading or hanging out. The library will have collections for people of all ages, plus plenty of parking to make it easy to visit.
On the outside, renderings of the design show a modern building with warm tones and large windows that will let in tons of natural light. If built, this new branch would undoubtedly make our list of stunning buildings in Edmonton, which already includes several libraries.
Even though the new branch promises to be a major upgrade, funding is still needed to make it a reality.
