A small Alberta town is one of the coldest places on Earth today

Residents of a small town in northern Alberta must be bundled up this morning, with it being one of the coldest spots on Earth today.

According to a new weather report from WX-Now, which tracks the world’s most extreme weather, Canada topped the top 10 coldest places on the planet on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, with an Alberta spot landing in seventh place.

High Level, with a population just shy of 4,000 people, is sitting at a bone-chilling -38°C, while Deadmen Valley in the Northwest Territories took the top spot for the coldest place in the world today, at a numbing -42°C.

Extreme cold warnings are currently in place for large portions of Alberta, including for High Level. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says extremely cold wind chill values near -40°C continue this morning; however, conditions will moderate by this afternoon.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant,” ECCC added.
