It’s about to get a little easier to get around in YEG, as a busy road in central Edmonton will reopen to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians on Saturday after months of closures.
Tomorrow, Stony Plain Road between 129th Street and 139rd Street and the new Stony Plain Road Bridge over Groat Road will reopen after its closure in late April to support the Valley Line West LRT expansion.
Some changes to the area include a permanent reduction to one lane of traffic in each direction. Most intersections will now be limited to right-in/right-out access, and left turns from Stony Plain Road onto side streets will be permanently banned.
However, left turns onto Stony Plain Road will still be allowed at 132nd Street and 134th Street. North-south traffic across Stony Plain Road will be maintained at 132nd, 134th, and 136th Streets, with 132nd Street expected to reopen in mid-December.
Pedestrian access will resume on both sides of Stony Plain Road and across the bridge. Crossings at 132nd, 134th, 136th, and 138th Streets will remain open, while pedestrian movements at 135th, 137th, and 139th Streets are permanently closed.
Work on the LRT Overhead Catenary System, streetlights, and utilities will continue, primarily during daytime hours, with occasional overnight work.
The City of Edmonton says that Marigold will provide advance notice of any traffic or pedestrian impacts.
