A big Christmas event takes over downtown Edmonton this weekend

If you are looking for some holiday cheer, a big Christmas event is taking over downtown Edmonton this weekend.

The City of Edmonton will host its Bright Light Skate Night this Saturday at Sir Winston Churchill Square, City Hall, and City Hall Plaza.

Not only can you get your skate on, but at 5 pm, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will hold the official lighting of the Christmas Tree at City Hall. The 40-foot-tall tree’s shaping up to be quite the sight, with hundreds of programmable lights and festive ornaments.

If you are on the hunt for even more Christmas tree content, a white spruce tree on the west side of Sir Winston Churchill Square will be lit again this year in “support of the City’s sustainability goals.”

Make sure to snap some photos and make a TikTok or two under the twinkling canopy lights strung over the City Hall ice rink while you are out enjoying it.

If you get chilly, free hot chocolate is set to be available at the Hallway Cafe, and you can warm up in one of the three warming domes on the City Hall Plaza, which will be lit, heated, and open for people to use during the free skate rental hours.
