If you submitted a claim for the $2.6-million Dollarama settlement, you might want to check your email. Canadians have started receiving 24-hour notices of payment.
Law firm LPC Avocats filed a class action lawsuit against the Quebec-based retail chain, alleging that Dollarama failed to correctly display the total price of products subject to environmental handling fees (EHFs). These fees apply to items such as batteries, electronic products, lightbulbs, or toys with batteries.
A release from the law firm stated, “The Plaintiff essentially alleged, among other things, that Dollarama did not properly advertise (display) the price of products subject to EHFs it offered for sale and that it charged a total price or EHFs higher than displayed for these products or allowed by law.”
Dollarama agreed to pay a settlement of $2,643,718.75, which the court approved.
The deadline to submit a claim was Feb. 14, and the class action administration service sent out emails to approved claims between Feb. 19 and 21.
Shoppers who purchased a product eligible for an EHF at a Dollarama anywhere in Canada could claim part of the settlement.
For Quebec shoppers, purchases need to have been made between Dec. 11, 2019, and July 4, 2023. For others elsewhere in Canada, purchases need to have been made between April 29, 2021, and July 4, 2023.
How much are Dollarama claimants receiving?

The settlement’s initial estimation of monetary compensation was between $3 and $10, depending on the total number of approved claimants.
Regardless of the number of products subject to EHFs customers have purchased, they were only eligible for a single claim.
According to the class action’s site, Canadians with approved claims were sent $7.50.
How do you get the deposit?
If you have auto-deposit enabled, you should’ve received the $7.50 in your bank account between Feb. 19 and 21.
For claimants who don’t have auto deposits, an email was sent on Feb. 21 containing a four-digit password needed to complete the deposit.
“Please be aware that you have 30 days to deposit the funds and finalize the transaction,” reads the email obtained by Daily Hive. “If you have already enrolled in Interac’s auto-deposit feature, you will not need to enter a password, and the funds will be automatically deposited into your bank account.”
If your claim was approved but you haven’t received a password, you can request it on the class action’s site.
