‘We’re still filling the glass,” Strathcona Spirits Distillery says after fire

A fire at Strathcona Spirits Distillery in south Edmonton on Wednesday caused minor injuries to one staff member, but could have been much worse, the company says.

“We’re still investigating what exactly what the issue was, but something around our gin still caused some kind of ignition and there was a fire,” founder and master distiller Adam Smith told CTV News Edmonton that evening.

“We did have one staff member that was burned, went to the hospital and was released. She’s home now. So ultimately, we’re grateful for the fact that it wasn’t worse,” he added.

“She’s a trooper.”

According to Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, an explosion at the distillery was reported at 10:16 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the back of the business was on fire.

Crews had the blaze under control by 10:30 a.m. and out by 11:23 a.m.

Smith said the business will be able to limp through the holiday season, which is its busiest time of year.

“Our products are stocked up and we’re still rolling orders out. Everything online is rolling. All our partners – the best shops in town, the best bars in town – carry us and we’re still filling the glass, so we’re happy to be able to be doing that.”

Smith also thanked the community for its concern.

“It almost can be stressful when your phone is blowing up and everyone cares, but at the end of the day, it’s like wow, everyone was reaching out. So much support… It’s heartwarming, really.”
