Police dogs, RCMP arrest wanted man near River Cree casino

Police dogs helped in the arrest of a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant at the River Cree Resort and Casino on Sunday morning.

RCMP were called to the casino in the early hours of the morning when a woman reported being assaulted by a man she knew.

The man had left the area, RCMP said, and an Edmonton Police Service K9 unit was called in to help to find him.

During the arrest, the man was injured by a police dog. He was treated and medically cleared at a hospital before being released into police custody.

The 61-year-old Edmonton man was charged with assault with a weapon, theft under $5,000 and possession of methamphetamine.

At the time of his arrest, he was on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation.

He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Stony Plain on Wednesday.
