Another day under the clouds in Edmonton and area as we’re stuck between a cold air mass to the east and northeast and a mild pocket of air to the west and southwest.
There was nearly 20 degrees difference between Jasper and Lloydminster early Monday afternoon.
We’ll see a similar split across the province today (and…to a lesser extent on Thursday).
In Edmonton, we’re not expecting much change to temperatures through the day. We’ll hover around -10 C for most of the morning and then inch up to -7 C or -8 C this afternoon.
We’re seeing snow to the south and east of the city early this morning, and the main snow zone appears to have shifted slightly to the east.
So, there’s a chance of a few flurries, but it shouldn’t be a repeat of yesterday and I’m not anticipating much more than a dusting.
The same goes for tonight and early Thursday; flurries are possible, but shouldn’t amount to much accumulation.
We’ll see temperatures get a bit milder in the coming days.
Thursday should get to -4 C or -5 C and we’ll be in the 0 C to -5 C range for highs Friday and Saturday.
Clouds will start to break late Thursday, but I’m not sure if that’ll happen before sunset. So…we may have to wait until Friday/Saturday to get some sun (and even those days won’t be bright, blue skies).
A low-pressure system will develop over central or southern Alberta on Saturday. That’s expected to produce some snow across northern Alberta and we may see a bit of light snow in the Edmonton area Sunday.
I think the bigger issue will be the drop in temperature behind that system for early next week.
We’ll probably drop to an afternoon high in the -7 C to -10 C range for Sunday and I’m still thinking we’ll be in the -11 C to -16 C range for highs Mondau/Tuesday.
HOWEVER, there’s a fair degree of uncertainty with that outlook and some of the models are strengthening a pacific low that could hold the cold air off to the east of the Edmonton region.
For now, I’m sticking with the colder forecast for early next week. But, that Sunday-Wednesday forecast is liable to change (possibly quite a bit) in the coming days as the pattern develops.
As always – stay tuned and we’ll continue you to update you in the coming days.
