The staff at the West Edmonton Mall’s Sea Lions Rock have announced the passing of Clara, a cherished California sea lion.
Clara, born on June 16, 1994, at Blackpool Zoo in England, was later transferred to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park in Scotland before arriving in Edmonton in October 2004.
“Clara was so full of personality – she was sweet, gentle, and nurturing, but also strong and decisive,” said the WEM in a Facebook post announcing Clara’s death.
As she aged, the team says it adapted its approach, installing ramps and utilizing audible targets to accommodate her declining vision and mobility.
“We worked tirelessly to provide her with every support and comfort possible,” said WEM officials.
The mall says when she was younger, Clara was known for her mentorship, teaching young sea lions the ropes. Her backflips through the pool showcased her strength and grace, they say, earning her admiration from trainers and visitors alike.
“It’s like losing a coworker,” said a trainer at the Sea Lions Rock.
The mall says Clara passed peacefully at on Friday at the age of 30, far exceeding the expected lifespan of California sea lions, which is typically 15 to 20 years.
“She will be dearly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing her,” said the WEM.
