South Edmonton seniors host party to celebrate Oilers postseason

Seniors in south Edmonton held a party to celebrate the Oilers playoffs. From music to a street hockey game, these long-time fans are getting into the playoff spirit.

“We’d be doing this every week if our residents had their way. They love the Oilers and they love celebrating,” said Pat Davidson, a life enrichment director with Touchmark Senior Home.

It’s a tradition that spans generations. Dressing in an Oilers jersey on game day. And many of these fans remember the last time the Oilers won the cup.

For those who live at the senior home, they say it’s one of the strongest for Oilers support. Many of them still attend games as season ticket holders but that support gets ramped up when playoffs start.

“The Oilers watch events are well attended and the staff does a great job of celebrating whatever celebrations there are and right now the Oilers are a celebration,” said Ed Butler, a resident at Touchmark Senior Home. “It means a lot to have the people be engaged.”

This year a new event was added to the afternoon festivities, a street hockey game between staff as entertainment. One resident decided to get his boots wet, re-living when he played hockey as a kid helping his team win the game.

“I wanted to do it so I did it. Maybe more will join in next time!”
