Edmonton saddles up for country music takeover

The 42nd Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards are in Edmonton on Saturday.

Leading up to the award show, Edmontonians will be able to partake in various events around the city.

Starting Wednesday, Sept. 11, the City of Edmonton is hosting ‘Country in the Square‘. The event will take place at Sir Winston Churchill Square and the City Hall Plaza between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The family-friendly event will feature a live performance from Nathan Miller, line dancing, games, and giveaways, and will be free for all who wish to attend.


The country party will continue on Thursday, with the ‘CCMA Country Crawl & Legends Car Show‘.

The car show will take place between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Sir Winston Churchill Square leading up to the CCMAs Legends Show.

The car show is free to enter and will feature performances from Colleen Rae and Bob Donaldson.

As for the CCMAs Legends Show, tickets are available online, and will feature various artists including Alberta’s own Paul Brandt.


On Friday, a pair of country-western movies will be shown at Sir Winston Churchill Square.

The first movie will be ‘Spirit Untamed‘ and it will start at 5 p.m., and it will be followed by ‘Rango‘ at 6:45 p.m.

In addition to the movies, there will also be crafts, games, and a sensory tent courtesy of Autism Edmonton.

The event will be free for all who wish to attend.


The main event — the CCMAs — will be on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Canadian country artists will be on full display at Rogers Place, where they’ll look to take home various awards including Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Fans’ Choice, and many more.
