Edmonton child-care centre closed by province over complaints of unsupervised children

The Government of Alberta has closed Willowbrae Academy West Point Centre in Edmonton after receiving numerous complaints that children were being left unsupervised.

The Province says the child-care centre’s licence was initially suspended as a result of a number of non-compliances, and a probationary licence with a term that expired on Oct. 9 was issued.

Under the probationary license, Child Care Licensing was working with the centre to help them return to compliance, however, the province says due to ongoing concerns, their suspended licence was not reinstated.

It is believed 187 children will be affected by the closure of Willowbrae Academy West Point Centre.

“Families affected by the closure of the program were notified in person on Oct. 9. Families not informed in person will be notified by email as soon as the contact information is provided by the child-care program. In addition, a notice confirming closure of the program, which describes the reason for closure, has been posted on the door of the facility,” said the province in a statement.

Those families will also be provided support while looking for alternative child-care options.
