Alberta RCMP is investigating a fire at a church that happened on Alexander First Nation Monday.
Mounties from Morinville responded to the First Nation around 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 30, after receiving a report that a Roman Catholic church on Highway 642 and Range Road 272 was on fire.
Fire departments from Alexander First Nation, Sturgeon County, and Moringville also responded to the fire and were able to bring it under control.
The church suffered a lot of damage and is believed to be a total loss, according to Mounties.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm that our Nation’s church burned down last night,” said the Alexander First Nation Fire Department in a statement on Facebook.
“For the remainder of the next few days please refrain from getting too close to the fire scene as there are dangerous toxic fumes that can cause severe health issues if inhaled.”
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and RCMP notes that “circumstances around this fire do appear suspicious in nature.”
If anyone has any information regarding the fire, they are asked to contact investigators at 780-939-4520 or Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐8477.
