Two collisions happened moments from each other on Highway 44 and Township 554 in Sturgeon County on Wednesday evening, leaving two people dead and injuring two others.
Morinville RCMP say the first collision, around 7:12 p.m., was caused when a 17-year-old girl drove her van across Highway 44 from Township Road 544 when it was struck by an oncoming pickup truck. The collision caused the van to go into the nearby ditch while the pickup remained on the highway, according to police.
Authorities say the second collision happened “shortly after” when the pickup, still containing the driver and passenger, was struck by an oncoming semi tractor trailer.
A 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old man — the driver and passenger of the pickup — were killed. Both were residents of Westlock County.
The drivers of the van and semi were treated by EMS and are expected to recover.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this collisions.
