Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking two severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes in central Alberta.
An Alberta Emergency Alert notifying a critical tornado warning was issued for several communities in the region Wednesday evening.
One thunderstorm is located 15 kilometres west of the hamlet of Morningside, Alta., approximately travelling along Highway 604.
The second thunderstorm is east of Bentley, Alta., approximately travelling along Highway 12.
Baseball-sized hail — or larger — is also possible with both thunderstorms being tracked.
“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” reads the alert.
The alert says “extra care and attention” should be exercised in and around communities such as Rimbey, Crestomere, Eckville and Lacombe.
As of 7:46 p.m., the alert has been issued for the following 13 affected areas:
- Lacombe County
- Birchcliff
- Bentley
- Gull Lake
- Blackfalds
- Lacombe
- Ponoka County
- Ponoka
- Samson 137
- Samson 137A
- Montana 139
- Ermineskin 138
- Parkland Beach
The warning, first issued at 7:12 p.m. MT, noted damaging winds locally intense rainfall are also possible.
“Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes,” reads Environment Canada’s website.
Residents are advised to take cover if threatening weather approaches, or if they see a funnel cloud or swirling debris.
The agency recommends going indoors and staying on the lowest floor, away from outside walls or windows.
