Man pointing replica gun at person, transit bus shot by Edmonton police

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man who was allegedly pointing a gun at a transit bus was shot at by an Edmonton police officer on Tuesday night.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says the suspect is in hospital in critical but stable condition.

By Wednesday morning, a section of Whyte Avenue between 95A Street and 91 Street was taped off.

Police say around midnight, officers responded to a weapons complaint at 82 Avenue and 93 Street. They allege a man was pointing what appeared to be a gun at an individual and waving the object in the air.

Officers arrived to find the suspect pointing the purported weapon at a bus, according to police. After a “confrontation,” an EPS officer fired at the man.

Edmonton police say officers took the suspect in custody and provided first aid, before he was transported to hospital.

Police say a replica handgun was recovered from the scene.
