Grass fire caused by pipeline explosion blocks west-central Alberta highway

A grass fire caused by a pipeline explosion in Yellowhead County has blocked a major highway in west-central Alberta.

RCMP in Edson said in a media release Monday afternoon the fire is making Highway 16 impassable for a 15-kilometre stretch between Highway 47 and Range Road 192, about 10 kilometres west of the town.

They said the cause of the explosion is unknown.

Edson is 195 kilometres west of Edmonton.

RCMP advises drivers to avoid the area and to seek different routes.
