Interim chiefs named for Edmonton Police Service

Two senior police officers will share the role of interim chief of the Edmonton Police Service following the retirement of Dale McFee.

Deputy Chief Devin Laforce and Deputy Chief Warren Driechel will share the role on a rotating schedule until a permanent chief is selected in the coming months, police said Friday.

Shazia Amiri, vice-chair of the Edmonton police commission, said it is hoped the appointments will provide a “smooth transition for all operations.”

“We look forward to having Warren and Devin provide their diverse perspectives and ideas to help improve policing and public safety in our city,” Amiri said in a news release.

McFee officially retired Friday after serving six years as Edmonton police chief. A former deputy minister of corrections and policing in Saskatchewan, McFee will become the Alberta government’s top civil servant on Feb. 24.

Driechel joined the service in 1997. Laforce has been with EPS since 1999.
