Calgary Flames are giving up on Tyson Barrie and could lose him for nothing

The Calgary Flames could soon be parting ways with Tyson Barrie.

The veteran defenceman, who initially joined the Flames on a PTO, will be placed on waivers this afternoon, as per Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli. The 33-year-old was absent from practice the past two days.

Barrie’s game has declined significantly over the past few years. He struggled to get into the Nashville Predators’ lineup in 2023-24 and has suited up for just 13 of the Flames’ 55 games this season.

Though his offensive skills remain, Barrie’s struggles in the defensive zone mixed with his noticeable lack of foot speed may scare teams away from claiming him, even though he carries a cap hit of just $1.25 million.

This may be the end of the road for Barrie, who has suited up for 822 career games in stints with the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Predators, and Flames. Over that span, he’s racked up 110 goals and 508 points.

Just a few days ago, the Flames announced that they had recalled both Ilya Solovyov and Yan Kuznetsov from the AHL. That means even with Barrie out of the fold, they have nine defencemen on their current roster.

This suggests that Kevin Bahl, who has been practicing with his teammates in recent days, may not be ready to return to the lineup just yet. The 24-year-old has missed the past eight games with an upper-body injury.

The Flames remain out of action for two more days, with their first game out of the break coming on Saturday night at the Saddledome versus the San Jose Sharks.
