Edmonton is deactivating its extreme weather response Tuesday morning with warmer temperatures on the way.
Extreme cold prompted the city to activate the response – which is designed to help its vulnerable population – on Friday. Temperatures dipped below minus-20 Celsius over the weekend.
The city’s cold weather plan includes overnight bus routes that transport people to shelters with capacity; the opening of an emergency shelter at Al Rashid Mosque; and day services at certain shelters.
The response is coming to an end as Edmonton’s extreme cold lessens into the week.
The extreme weather response is activated when temperatures will be colder than -20 C with wind chill for at least three consecutive nights.
