Motorists in south Edmonton should prepare for some major road changes soon, including a lane shift at a key intersection.
The City of Edmonton says that beginning on/around November 16, Ledcor, the design-build contractor for the Capital Line South LRT project, will implement a major lane shift at the 23 Avenue and 111th Street intersection.
This change is needed for the construction of the LRT underpass, which will eventually allow trains to travel beneath the intersection. The change is expected to remain in place for approximately two years.
The major lane shift will run northeast of the existing intersection, and eastbound and westbound traffic on 23 Avenue will be shifted slightly north. To accommodate LRT underpass construction, traffic on 111th Street will be shifted to the east, ensuring a continuous flow and preventing full closures.
Throughout the two-year major lane shift, traffic on 111th Street will be shifted to either side of the work area. Construction Notices will be issued before any traffic-flow changes. Two lanes of traffic and single-turn lanes will be maintained in all directions. After the intersection is open, Ledcor will remove the asphalt of the old intersection and sidewalks.
For safety, the speed limit on 111th Street between Century Park Station and Saddleback Road/19 Avenue will be reduced to 40 km/h. The speed limit on 23 Avenue approaching 111th Street will also be reduced to 40 km/h.
The city says work will take place on weekdays between 7 am and 5 pm. Some construction may occur on Saturdays, depending on the weather.
Phase 1 of the Capital Line South Extension project will see major construction along 111th Street, which is anticipated to begin in spring 2025. Major construction is anticipated to take four to five years to complete, followed by testing and commissioning.
